The 28th Huron Fringe Birding Festival

will be held
May 22 to 25 and May 28 - 31, 2026

 

Online Registration will be active on March 13 at 6 am 

 

A Birder's discount is available at the Travelodge Motel (50%) 519-832-2021 and the All Seasons Motel (10%) 519-389-2244, both in Port Elgin.  Contact the motels directly to request the discount and advise you can show your registration confirmation at check-in.

New this year!

Pick up a Huron Fringe Birding Festival Bird Checklist and check off your sightings on events you attend throughout the Festival. When you have tallied 100 species (or more) bring your checklist to the Registration Tent to collect your           100 Species Pin!

 

ALL-DAY EVENT participants will park, register and depart from the Campers Beach Parking Lot. 
Most other events will start at the Visitor Centre.  Generally, morning events return to the Visitor Centre by 11:00am; afternoon and all-day events return to their respective parking lots by 4:30pm (3:30pm on 1st Saturday);  events by 3:00 pm.

We also offer some mobility limited events.   This 🚗 indicates where vehicle transportation is required.
This ⭐ indicates a shortened event ending by 3:00pm.

Every day at the Visitor Centre – Early morning coffee & treats. BBQ lunches daily 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
NATURE SHOWCASE at the Visitor Centre 11:00 am (1st Saturday)
Mix & mingle at The Nest over lunch. Check out the ‘By Donation’ Table in the Visitor Centre.

Youth (10-17) are welcome on Festival events (ages 10 -12 accompanied by an adult who is also registered for that event). Children under 10 are not allowed on Festival events.

    Kiah birded much of Ontario in 2022 and holds the record for most species seen in one year! We’ll spend the day birding the east coast of the peninsula, enjoying the gorgeous scenery of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay.

    Mark will lead us to this extensive escarpment-framed marsh located in Grey County. A network of boardwalk and hiking trails introduce you to vibrant ecosystems that are home to wetland and forest birds.

    Join Jeremy in his quest for the abundant birds of the beautiful Bruce. Jeremy held Ontario’s Big Year record from 2017 to 2021 and is a very popular birding guide.

    Birdlife along the shoreline fringe and through the heart of the park is featured on this walk from the Visitor Centre. Henrique is an expert birder and leader.

    Tim’s fieldwork with Birds Canada includes several sites within MacGregor Point. Wander the Park’s woods and wetlands looking for later migrants and birds already on territory.

    Bruce County birders affectionately refer to the Kincardine Lagoons as “Pelee North” because of its often-spectacular fallouts of warblers. James is a popular local leader, and this is one of his favourite birding areas.

    Join Alessandra for a morning of birding along the shores, dunes and forests of Inverhuron Provincial Park. This location boasts coniferous woods breeding birds and has turned up a number of rarities in its various other habitats.

    *Anyone wishing to meet the group at Inverhuron Provincial Park must contact the registrar by noon the day before the event at huronfringebirdfest@gmail.com or 519-375-1889 to request inclusion on a remote attendee list. It is critical that the group at the Park know you will be meeting remotely.

    We’ll wander some of MacGregor’s birdiest niches looking and listening for migrants and birds already on territory. Tim will give you tips on deciphering and describing bird songs to enhance your birding by ear skills.

    This leisurely excursion will explore the Lake Huron shoreline along the Old Shore Road, visiting the unique ecosystems that exist within MacGregor Point. (easy) (limit 16)

    THE HUMBLE CHICKADEE

    You never know what you might discover about the humble chickadee! Scott’s backyard is the Mountain Research Station near Boulder, Colorado; but he grew up just down the shoreline in Inverhuron and once worked as a naturalist at MacGregor Point!

    This trail is a birder’s favourite. We’ll walk through the woods to the Ducks Unlimited pond viewing tower for a mix of wetland and woodland finds.

    Without travelling far, Marshall will take us on his favorite backroads and byways to see the birds of the countryside. There will be some stunning views of Lake Huron while birding.

    Come away with a toolkit of skills and ideas you can apply in your bird photography. Wildlife photographer Ankur will discuss the elements of a good bird photo. He’ll show you how to choose settings, make the most of light and background, touch on composition, and ways to adapt techniques to different field conditions

    5:00pm BIRDER'S BANQUET & KEYNOTE SPEAKER - FRUIT OF THE LOON: THE VALUE OF CITIZEN SCIENCE 🚗(St. Joseph’s Jubilee Hall, 920 Wellington Street, Port Elgin)

    Mark explores the fascinating lives of the Common Loon through their breeding season to their migration preparations. Learn all about loons and how citizen science programs contribute to conserving this iconic species.

    The meal is from Harley's Pub & Perk in Mildmay, buffet with chicken and beef entrees with vegetarian option available.

    **Please contact the registrar by May 1 for the vegetarian option or advise of a gluten free diet so that requests can be reported to the caterer.   

    The serving method will comply with Public Health Unit regulations at the time of the event.

    This event is being held at St. Joseph’s Jubilee Hall, 920 Wellington Street, Port Elgin.

    Participants arriving for their first Festival event will receive their Festival name badge when they check in on-site.

    No refunds for this special event as of May 15 as the caterer will have been notified of our meal requirements.

    Bruce County birders affectionately refer to the Kincardine Lagoons as “Pelee North” because of its often-spectacular fallouts of warblers. James is a popular local leader, and this is one of his favourite birding areas.

    Wear sturdy footwear with a heel (flip-flops not permitted) and weather-appropriate clothing (an extra layer is recommended). Participants must be at least 4' (120cm) tall.
