The 26th Huron Fringe Birding Festival

will be held
May 24 to 30 and May 30 - June 2, 2024.

 

Online Registration will be active on March 15 at 6 am

Electronic waivers will be completed prior to the Festival to save time on your arrival date!

 

ALL-DAY EVENT participants will park, register and depart from the Campers Beach Parking Lot. 
Most other events will start at the Visitor Centre.  Generally, morning events return to the Visitor Centre by 11:30am (11:00am mornings of Nature Showcase); afternoon and all-day events return to their respective parking lots by 4:30pm (3:30pm on 1st Saturday); โญevents by 3:00 pm.

We also offer some mobility limited events.   This ๐Ÿš— indicates where vehicle transportation is required.

Every day at the Visitor Centre โ€“ Early morning coffee & treats. BBQ lunches daily 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
NATURE SHOWCASE at the Visitor Centre 11:00 am (1st Saturday/Sunday and 2nd Saturday)

Youth (10-21) are welcome on Festival events (ages 10 & 11 accompanied by an adult who is also registered for that event). Children under 10 are not allowed on Festival events.

    Anishinaabe culture and the rich ecosystems found in Neyaashiinigmiing will be featured. Birds will be singing, wildflowers will be blooming and the scenery is spectacular.

    *There will be one pre-arranged alternate meeting location available, remote from the Park along the route.   Once you have completed your registration, contact the registrar at huronfringebirdfest@gmail.com or 519-375-1889 for more details and to request inclusion on the remote attendee list. It is critical that the group at the Park know you will be meeting remotely.

    Bruce County birders affectionately refer to the Kincardine Lagoons as โ€œPelee Northโ€ because of its often-spectacular fallouts of warblers. James is a popular local leader and this is one of his favourite birding areas.

    Timโ€™s fieldwork with Birds Canada includes several sites within MacGregor Point. Weโ€™ll wander the Parkโ€™s woods and wetlands looking for later migrants and birds already on territory.

    Sarah  has taken her passions from coast to coast in Canada and to Antartica where she carried out research on Gentoo Penguins. With a title like - "Beaks and Brushes: Discover the unseen lives of penguins at sea and how we can share stories through wildlife art" - how could you go wrong! You will be captivated by how sound research, art and conservation can bring the unseen lives of Gentoo Penguins to life! Discover how Sarah shares stories through wildlife art about this breaking research on penguins.

    Come join Alessandra in a fun and relaxing field sketching workshop focusing on the birds and wildlife in our area. She will cover materials and techniques for working quickly in the field. Drawing materials supplied. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to experienced artists!

    When a punk is also a birder, they do a very different Big Year. Paul will speak about his journey as a birder and a punk, which was featured in a CBC documentary. 

    The meal from Harley's Pub & Perk in Mildmay, buffet with chicken and beef entrรฉes with vegetarian option available.

    Please contact the registrar by May 1 for the vegetarian option so that requests can be reported to the caterer.   

    The serving method will comply with Public Health Unit regulations at the time of the event.

    Free Event - sponsored by Southampton Rotary Club 

    A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. This drop-by event is a great opportunity to see birds up close. Watch as Alessandra collects birds from mist nets, records data and explains the benefits of bird banding.

    Difficulty: MOBILITY LIMITED -- Suitable for those who have difficulty walking.

    Tonight's presentation by John Reaume will explore the life history of the American Kestrel. For 3 years we have had the pleasure of watching a pair of American Kestrels nest and raise their young in a Kestrel/Screech Owl box mounted on our workshop and visible from our back porch. This photo essay will review the life history of the Kestrel with intimate views of their nesting behaviour thanks to an โ€œin-the-boxโ€ camera as well as images captured from photo blinds. We will see the differing behaviours of the male and female parents as well as what the avian neighbours think of having a pair of nesting kestrels in their territories!

    Join Doug Pedwell, past President of the Saugeen Shores Camera club, for this all day photo outing on the Bruce Peninsula. There will be a cornucopia of Nature Photo opportunities ranging from landscapes both large and small, orchids, birds, and a variety of nature shots. A wee bit of architectural photography may present itself. This will be a long day as we will have to get to the farthest point of trip which will be an hour and 15 minute drive.  From there we will wend our way south and photographing at various locations as hard back to the park. We go rain or shine. Walking ranges from easy to difficult.  Further updates will be in the website in the spring.
