The 27th Huron Fringe Birding Festival

will be held
May 23 to 26 and May 29 - June 1, 2025.

 

Online Registration will be active on March 14 at 6 am 

 

ALL-DAY EVENT participants will park, register and depart from the Campers Beach Parking Lot. 
Most other events will start at the Visitor Centre.  Generally, morning events return to the Visitor Centre by 11:30am (11:00am mornings of Nature Showcase); afternoon and all-day events return to their respective parking lots by 4:30pm (3:30pm on 1st Saturday);  events by 3:00 pm.

We also offer some mobility limited events.   This 🚗 indicates where vehicle transportation is required.

Every day at the Visitor Centre – Early morning coffee & treats. BBQ lunches daily 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
NATURE SHOWCASE at the Visitor Centre 11:00 am (1st Saturday)
Mix & mingle at The Nest over lunch. Check out the ‘By Donation’ Table in the Visitor Centre.

Youth (10-21) are welcome on Festival events (ages 10 -12 accompanied by an adult who is also registered for that event). Children under 10 are not allowed on Festival events.

    Mark will lead us to this Escarpment-framed extensive marsh complex located in Grey County. A network of boardwalk and hiking trails introduce you to vibrant ecosystems that are home to wetland and forest birds.

    The Bruce is bursting with birds at this time of year - late migrants and early breeders on territory. Mike will introduce you to the wonders of the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula.

    Join Jeremy in his quest for the abundant birds of the beautiful Bruce. Jeremy held Ontario’s Big Year record from 2017 to 2021 and is a very popular birding guide.

    Birdlife along the shoreline fringe is featured during this walk from the Visitor Centre. David is an avid birder and an enthusiastic leader.

    Tim’s fieldwork with Birds Canada includes several sites within MacGregor Point. We’ll wander the Park’s woods and wetlands looking for later migrants and birds already on territory.

    Bruce County birders affectionately refer to the Kincardine Lagoons as “Pelee North” because of its often-spectacular fallouts of warblers. James is a popular local leader, and this is one of his favourite birding areas.

    Join Alessandra for a morning of birding along the shores of Inverhuron Provincial Park. This location boasts breeding birds that prefer a coniferous habitat and has also turned up a number of rarities. 

    *Anyone wishing to meet the group at Inverhuron Provincial Park must contact the registrar by noon the day before the event at huronfringebirdfest@gmail.com or 519-375-1889 to request inclusion on a remote attendee list. It is critical that the group at the Park know you will be meeting remotely.
    Participants arriving for their first Festival event will receive their Festival name badge from the event coordinator.

    STORM BIRDING
    Leader: Kiah Jasper

    Join Kiah for an evening discussion about storms, rare birds and exciting photos. Most people know that weather and good birding go hand in hand. For example, going to Pelee on a rainy day can net you a fallout of warblers. If you dive deeper into it though, you can find ties between certain weather patterns and specific birds showing up, and use this knowledge to plan future birding trips.

    * Please note: If this is your first or only event with the Festival, we must have your signed waiver prior to the event.

    Difficulty: MOBILITY LIMITED -- Suitable for those who have difficulty walking.

    Nocturnal adaptations are required to rule the night. From owls to crickets to fireflies, we’ll learn how these creatures thrive when darkness descends.

    We’ll explore botanically rich nature reserves as we cross the lower Bruce Peninsula from Lake Huron to Georgian Bay. The dolostone of Bruce and Grey contributes to the presence of provincially rare ferns, wildflowers and other wild botanicals.

    We’ll take a ramble ‘round MacGregor listening to songs in the air and looking for birds in the trees. Birds will be settling onto territory and proclaiming their domain in full song from the treetops.

    Join Alessandra in a field-sketching workshop, with MacGregor's scenery as your backdrop. All are welcome - beginners to experienced artists! 

    Bring your own materials - sketch pad; pencil, crayons, coloured pencils or watercolour pencils; a hat and a chair if you plan to stay on the Boardwalk.

    We'll walk along the Lake Huron aka sweetwater sea shore scoping for waterbirds and looking and listening for songbirds along Huron's fringe woods. Dale will bring his scope to ensure everyone gets great views.

    Birding has a great deal to teach us about how to live a good life and how to be a better human being. Julia will show us how birding helps us see the world with wonder, nuance and empathy.

    The meal from Harley's Pub & Perk in Mildmay, buffet with chicken and beef entrees with vegetarian option available.

    **Please contact the registrar by May 1 for the vegetarian option or advise of a gluten free diet so that requests can be reported to the caterer.   

    The serving method will comply with Public Health Unit regulations at the time of the event.

    $70 special event fee per person; no single event fee will be applied.

    This event is being held at St. Joseph’s Jubilee Hall, 920 Wellington Street, Port Elgin.

    Parallel to the Lake Huron shore, this natural area contains a great example of sand dunes that were laid down shortly after the glaciers left.     NATURAL HISTORY OF THE EASTERN BLUEBIRD

    John Reaume will give a presentation on the natural history of the Eastern Bluebird. We will learn about interesting behaviours to look for in the field and be treated with intimate views of their family life with images from a Bluebird Nestbox camera. The fate of the Eastern Bluebird has been tied to human activities for both better and worse and is currently considered a conservation success story.

    Join Kiah for a morning of birding along the western shoreline of the peninsula, focusing on Sauble Beach and Oliphant. Shorebirds, gulls, terns and breeding songbirds will be our targets. This is one of Kiah’s favourite areas on the peninsula, and there are always interesting things to see!
